POINT OF VIEW

Great digital user experience design is often described with a very specific set of adjectives: clean, simple, intuitive, minimalist. We strive to create interfaces that are frictionless, that get out of the user's way, and that deliver their function with an almost invisible elegance.
But how do you achieve that? What are the foundational principles that separate a merely "uncluttered" design from one that feels truly profound, intentional, and deeply satisfying to use?
For years, I've found the best answers not in tech design manuals, but in the work of one of the world's most revered and minimalist architects: Tadao Ando.
Ando is a master of concrete, light, and space. His buildings—from stunning churches made of intersecting light beams to serene museums that seem to grow out of the earth—are famous for their stark, powerful simplicity. But this simplicity is not a lack of complexity; it is the result of a deep, philosophical commitment to a few core principles.
He is, in my view, the ultimate user experience designer. He doesn't just design buildings; he designs emotional journeys through space. By deconstructing his architectural philosophy, we can uncover a powerful and timeless framework for creating digital experiences that are not just usable, but unforgettable.
