In the world of UX writing and content design, we are obsessed with brevity. We fight for every character. We debate the soul-crushing difference between "Submit" and "Continue." Our job is to convey the maximum amount of meaning and emotion in the minimum amount of space.
We are, in a sense, poets.
So why do we study the language of tech blogs and marketing guides when we should be studying the masters of the craft? For years, I’ve held a secret belief: the single greatest textbook for a UX writer is not a style guide from a tech giant, but the collected works of the 17th-century Japanese haiku master, Matsuo Bashō.
A haiku is a marvel of narrative efficiency. It is a tiny, three-line, 17-syllable container that can hold a universe of image, emotion, and story. It is a masterclass in the art of the unsaid, the power of the concrete image, and the rhythm of a perfect reveal.
The classic 5-7-5 syllable structure of a haiku is not just a poetic constraint; it is a neurological framework for delivering an idea with maximum impact. By deconstructing this ancient form, we can find a revolutionary new model for writing the microcopy that defines our users' digital experience—from error messages to empty states to confirmation screens.
Stop thinking like a copywriter. Start thinking like a poet.
